Momentum West has recognized Northwood Technical College and Westfields Hospital & Clinic & Clinic with the Top Talent Initiative Award for their collaborative effort in addressing the critical shortage of Medical Lab Technicians (MLTs). Their partnership led to the creation of the Medical Lab Education Center (MLEC), a facility that will enhance workforce development and improve regional healthcare services.

"The collaboration between Northwood Technical College and Westfields Hospital & Clinic demonstrates the kind of innovation and community partnership that advances economic and workforce development in our region," said Steve Jahn, Executive Director of Momentum West. “By investing in this training facility, they are addressing a workforce shortage and enhancing healthcare services for the entire community.”

'Award-Winning Collaboration Expands Local Training Opportunities for Medical Lab Technicians

The MLEC project repurposed a former eye clinic owned by Westfields Hospital & Clinic, transforming it into a state-of-the-art training facility. With advanced laboratory spaces, the center will provide hands-on training for MLT students, equipping them with the skills necessary to perform essential diagnostic tests such as blood sample analysis.

"A shortage of MLTs can lead to delays in diagnoses and slower patient care, making this initiative a crucial step toward strengthening healthcare services in the region," said Steve Massey, President & CEO of Westfield Hospital & Clinic.

The project received overwhelming community support, securing approximately $800,000 in private grants and donations. Without these contributions and Westfields Hospital & Clinic's commitment, Northwood Technical College would not have been able to launch this critical program.

Westfields Hospital & Clinic has long been a partner of Northwood Technical College, with many of its employees receiving their education from the college. The hospital will also benefit from the MLEC by incorporating a simulation training space and a meeting area into the facility, further strengthening its workforce development efforts.

"Momentum West has played a key role in supporting this initiative, recently nominating it for a private grant that would fund exterior infrastructure improvements," said John Will, President of Northwood Technical College. “Momentum West continues to increase collaboration among regional stakeholders to solve pressing workforce challenges, including housing and childcare.”
