Programs Shaping the Workforce of Tomorrow
Youth Summer Camps
UW-Stout’s Youth Summer Camps are immersive experiences that ignite curiosity and career exploration. Students engage directly with faculty and current UW-Stout students, gaining hands-on exposure to fields ranging from video game design to outdoor challenges. The camps help create an environment where creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration thrive.
Summer and Junior STEAM Experiences
The university’s STEAM (STEM + Art & Design) Experiences introduce students to interdisciplinary learning in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. High schoolers aged 14-17 participate in the Summer STEAM program, including dorm stays, interactive panels with current students, and activities emphasizing the importance of creative problem-solving.
For middle school students entering grades 6-8, the Junior STEAM Experience offers an all-in-one exploration camp followed by specialized sessions, providing early exposure to innovative fields.
Make48 Competition
In October 2024, UW-Stout hosted the high-energy Make48 competition, uniting high school SkillsUSA students with UW-Stout peers. This 48-hour challenge tested their creativity, teamwork, and technical skills as they developed prototypes, marketing plans, and pitches for a panel of judges. The winning team earned $2,000 and advanced to the Season 8 Nationals, exemplifying the power of collaboration and resourcefulness.
Tech Tuesdays at the Fab Lab
The Discovery Center Fab Lab at UW-Stout opened its doors to the Boys and Girls Club of Menomonie, giving students access to cutting-edge equipment like 3D printers and laser cutters. During Tech Tuesdays, students engaged in engineering, robotics, and design projects, gaining hands-on experience rarely accessible at their age.
Future Efforts in Workforce Development
Through these initiatives, UW-Stout sparks interest in STEAM careers and builds a robust regional talent pipeline that supports West Central Wisconsin’s workforce needs. By providing young learners with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities to explore their potential, the university is shaping a brighter future for the region.
Momentum West’s recognition highlights the university’s dedication to fostering innovation, creativity, and skill development. As Jahn noted, “Programs like these ensure our young people are inspired and equipped to succeed in today’s fast-changing world, and we’re thrilled to honor UW-Stout for their remarkable leadership in this area.”
