Dance studio opens in St. Croix Falls
17 Oct 2017
The River City Dance Company opened a dance studio on Sept. 6 at 132 North Washington Street in St. Croix Falls.
The owner, Sheryl Baker, started her dance career by clogging, figure skating and exploring other forms of dance. However, it was clogging that captivated Baker at the age of 15.
Clogging is an American folk art with many distinctive characteristics. It is a form of dance that is taught in large groups for all ages. Dancers wear a white leather shoe with two metal taps on both the heel and toe. It is an energetic dance style that is easy to learn and provides an exciting aerobic exercise.
Baker explains, “My mother and I saw a performance at a local festival and thought it would be something fun for us to learn together because we both loved music and dancing. I am originally from Canada, so that is where I learned to clog. I moved to the United States after getting a job dancing at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Then, I settled in Minnesota to raise my family and start my clogging group in this area.”
Baker has been a clogging instructor for 30 years and now all four of her children clog on her River City Dance Team. The oldest, Alyssa, has become well versed in other forms of dancing by attending classes at Larkin Dance Studio; she plans to teach the techniques she has learned to eager dancers at her mom’s new dance studio.
