Amery is a community built on hard workers and big dreamers. This is especially true for one of the youngest entrepreneurs in the area, Katlin Graski. One week before she graduated from Amery High School last May of 2025, Graski kicked off her dream of owning a bakery, opening Kate Bakes to the community. Her small shop selling sourdough-based goods from bread to cinnamon rolls is located just outside Bittersweet Homestead, the place where she worked all four years of high school and gained the skills, resources and support needed to start her own business.
Before building her stand, Graski started her business off at the Amery Farmer’s Market, selling single packaged items such as muffins and cookies. It was a small start but encouraged her to keep building her brand and kicked off the networking that would lead to her success as a small business owner. For Graski, the biggest transition was shifting from baking to the customer’s order to creating a menu and offering her unique products. Winter of her senior year, she created her sourdough starter, which took two months to build, and began promoting Kate Bakes as a sourdough bakery, experimenting with different types of breads, cookies, and scones. She moved into a small stand that her boyfriend built, setting out her products for customers to pick from.
