Business 101 at three neighborhood lemonade stands

Now that the Dairy Month promotions of June have passed, Wisconsin's 1.27 million milk cows can relax and go about their daily routines. Bring on real summer activities. July means neighborhood lemonade stands and they represent Free Enterprise 101 and the Basics of Entrepreneurship rolled into a couple hours of fun.

Profit? Loss? Cash Flow? Who cares? These are little kids with big hearts and even bigger dreams. Many times the money from pop-up stands goes to worthwhile causes like the parents' out-of-pocket share of expenses to send a son or daughter to Washington, D.C., or a donation to the Ronald McDonald House, or selfishly, a new bike or hockey camp.

A St. Croix Valley know-it-all recently walked through a subdivision which yielded three lemonade hawkers, including an all-girl stand, a brother-sister combo and a solo effort.
