Over 20 years ago, Gary and Shelly Jessen would go to their cabin and bring a personally crafted Bloody Mary seasoning batch to avoid traveling with multiple bottles. The batch eventually became a regular gift item for friends and family of the couple.
When the two were ready to retire from their respective careers with Anderson Windows in 2020, word of their Bloody Mary mix led to Old World Canning Co. in Woodbury, Minn. asking for the 1788 spice to be included in its Bloody Mary recipe.
“And we're both like, ‘God, I don't know,’” Shelly said. “It's like, ‘Do we want to start a business?’ And then, then we talked it over, and when we first started, we're selling five pound bags only in bulk to one customer.”
