Could UW Health nurses unionize in 2025? Maybe, and here’s why

A union representing hundreds of UW Health nurses hopes a recent court decision overturning limits on collective bargaining will pave the way for success in their own push for recognition, which is set to go before the Wisconsin Supreme Court next year.
UW Health has argued the limits on collective bargaining for public employees in Act 10, passed at the urging of former Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans in 2011, means the health system doesn’t have to recognize the nurses’ union.
Prior to 2014, nurses at the hospital were unionized. But after their contract expired, UW Health officials said the hospital was unable to negotiate a new deal due to Act 10.
