Bell Press newspapers in Ladysmith, Chetek and Barron were presented awards during the Wisconsin Newspaper Association annual convention at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison.
Competing among newspapers of “medium-circulation,” the Chetek Alert captured first prize in the breaking news coverage category for its work in the aftermath of the deadly tornado that struck Barron County on May 16, 2016. Staff member Carl Cooley was the writer and photographer for the coverage.
Chetek sports editor Tyler Florczak was recognized with a first place award for his feature photo of a chickadee landing next to a cardinal on a bird feeder.
Competing among large-circulation weeklies were the Ladysmith News and the Barron News-Shield, also owned by Bell Press.
