Bike trails, breweries and a charming B&B make for a relaxing rural getaway in the Menomonie area

Hidden gem is an overused term in the travel world.

In the age of the Internet and Instagram, there aren’t many hidden gems anymore.

But if you are open to traveling to lesser known spots, you might still find a little diamond in the rough.

I found just such a jewel in the Hay River House Bed and Breakfast outside Boyceville.

Rural Dunn County isn’t exactly a top tourist destination. About 20 miles north of Menomonie and 40 miles northwest of Eau Claire, the town and little bed and breakfast probably wouldn't have been on my radar if my dart for this trip hadn’t landed just to the north near Prairie Farm.

But never seeing this charming bed and breakfast would have been missing an unexpectedly lovely, quiet getaway near a small college town.
