Hines celebrates 50 years on the job

Joe Hines had no idea a lifelong career would follow a request from his father to lend some help to the Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery in 1966 following its cheese production expansion.

Back then, the 18-year-old Hines was working in construction and helping out on farms in the area. The creamery called Hines’ dad one day and asked if he knew anyone interested in working at the newly-expanded creamery. The dairy farmer volunteered his son, who that day was out helping a neighbor on his farm.

“I was out bailing hay for a neighbor,” Hines recalled. “He comes and says, ‘I’ll finish bailing. You go down there. They are looking for help.’”
