Downtown Neighbors: Comics store welcomes (Super)heroes

Growing up in Glenwood City, John Hansen had two goals in life, to own a house and to own his own comic book store. At the age of 35, Hansen had already accomplished both goals.

Heroes Welcome, Menomonie’s premiere comic book shop, is set to celebrate its three-year anniversary as a member of downtown this month. Hansen says he “can’t believe it has been three years already. Menomonie has been very accepting of the business.”

So, why comic books? After moving to the Twin Cities, Hansen remembered visiting the now-defunct Shinders comic book and baseball card stores that were scatted throughout the cities.

Hansen remembers, “My mom would want to go shopping, so she would drop me off at the nearby Shinders where I would sit for hours reading comics.” His passion never dissipated and so upon buying a house in Glenwood City, he looked for an opportunity to open up his very own shop.
